Nelson’s growth highest
Nelson’s spending growth was the highest in the country last month and a lot of that is down to tourists, say eftpos provider Paymark Paymark released its November figures yesterday and it showed Nelson leading the way with 8.1 per cent growth. This year, $91.6 million was spent through the network, compared to last year’s $84.7 million. Paymark’s Mark Spicer says Nelson and Otago were the regions with the highest growth rates in the country. “This may be attributed to the strong growth in spending on accommodation that we have seen this year, as well as the consistent increases in the food and beverage sectors. For example, Nelson and Otago are popular destinations for kiwis and tourists.”
Nationally, the growth rate was 5.2 per cent. Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says the Paymark figures have been really good for Nelson two months in a row and, with the Christmas season upon us, it will only get better. “Traditionally it’s the second week of December when Christmas spending really kicks in and retailers are saying it’s definitely started.” Cathy says people seem to have more discretionary money to spend which is helping bars and restaurants. “Our hospitality sector has really been strengthening and we you get places like Panama and Urban opening. It benefits everybody because the city becomes a destination for dining and going out.”

Mike’s class and dignity through the entire process has been a credit to him and his family. He may have lost his battle but his continued desire to live life to the fullest shows the spirit of the man. In the first article that Nelson Weekly wrote on Mike, in April, he told us that he’d already done his Christmas shopping but he wasn’t sure if he’d live long enough to watch his children open them. New name for walkway?
The recently-opened Maitai walkway could be renamed the Anzac Memorial Walkway. Last week, the chair of the Nelson City Council’s governance committee, Ian Barker, recommended the name change, after it was suggested in a letter to the council from Nelson man Brian Ramsay.
The full council has supported the idea in principle but has called for a staff report on the change. Ian says the renaming would be a perfect way to honour the soldiers who fought at Gallipoli. “Next April is exactly 100 years since the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli. It would be a very
good thing to note that,” he says. “Especially considering that we believe the walkway is the route the soldiers took for the first enlistment, before they shipped out.” The walkway isn’t yet complete, with a pedestrian foot-bridge under Trafalgar St bridge still being worked on.

Thousands of people lined the centre of Nelson on Sunday to welcome a special guest to town. The Nelson Santa Parade was once again a popular showpiece, with 45 floats entertaining the crowds before Santa arrived on his high sleigh. The Hickety Pik Southern Steamers won best attraction, with the Nelson Repertory Theatre in second and the Iron Duke Sea Scouts coming third. Last year, William Healey saw the Shop ‘n Win entry forms in Advanced Automotive’s Richmond workshop, but says he “didn’t bother filling them out because I’ll never win it”. But this year he decided to give it a go, filling out one of the entry forms when he was at Advanced Automotive and it paid off, with William, last Thursday, winning the top prize of $5000 cash. William’s big win was also a bonus for Advanced Automotive’s Tony and Janine Grainger who received $1500 for submitting the winning entry. A record 78,000 entries were received for this year’s Shop ‘n Win promotion which was run by the Waimea Weekly and Richmond Mall and gave shoppers a chance to win $7500. Richmond shopper, Sharon Riordan, had earlier won $2500 worth of Richmond Mall vouchers in the first stage of the competition drawn last month. “I thought Tony was having me on when he phoned and said I’d won,” William says. “I’ve never really won anything big before and I only put in two entries, so the odds weren’t good. “I filled in the entry when I was waiting at the counter of Advanced Automotives and said to Tony ‘if I win I’ll do the diff on the car’. Tony says William has been a regular customer at Advanced Automotive since they opened at their Cargill Place workshop in July 2008. He estimates that William’s entry form was one of about 100 filled in at their workshop. “I’m really pleased it’s one of our regu-
lars who won,” Tony says. “It’s also nice for us winning $1500 a few weeks out from Christmas.” The big prize was drawn under supervision at the Richmond police station last Thursday and Waimea Weekly advertising manager Sue Davies says it signalled the end of another successful promotion. “It’s a fantastic way for retailers to thank their customers for all their support,” Sue says. All the shops in the Richmond Mall and 38 others around Richmond participated in the promotion.

Art students share top prize
Two Nelson students, Haiyun Jiang and Erika Isaksen, have shared the year’s top award for visual arts and design from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. The Jens Hansen Excellence Award in Visual Arts and Design is presented for Studio Practice in the final year of the Bachelor of Arts and Media programme. NMIT creative industries arts tutor, Catharine Salmon, says the two students have quite different creative practices, Haiyun works in graphic design and Erika Isaksen with video installation. Haiyun (Harry) Jiang from China used T-shirts as a medium for his exhibition work, exploring in a humorous way, cultural, societal and economic relations between Chinese and Western societies. Erika’s digital installation explores the absurd repetitiveness of the everyday as a crucial part of a fulfilling and meaningful life.

FUNDRAISER HITS MARKET: Last month, Nelson Weekly told the story of Nelson’s Andrea Campbell and her bid to raise money to fight multiple sclerosis. This Sunday, she’ll be at Monty’s Sunday Market in Montgomery Square collecting money for the treatment. All up she needs to raise $170,000. MODELLERS POND: Nelson City Council had a meeting about the future of the Tahunanui Modellers Pond last week, where it was decided to seek another investigation about how to keep it clean from weed and algae. Deputy mayor Paul Matheson says he made it “abundantly clear” that the pond should be saved and not filled in as some other councillors suggested. “The pond doesn’t just belong to Tahunanui, it’s belongs to the city and the tourist market and we should do everything in our power to make sure that it remains open and viable. We need to investigate all the options to ensure it remains.” Paul says filling the pond in would be a great shame and that it’s not past its used-by date. He says he’d like to see the bottom of the pond concreated, which would stop the weed.

New home for 280 classic motorbikes Locally Owned and Operated
One of the largest classic motorbike collections in the southern hemisphere has a new home, on Nelson’s Haven Rd. A passion for classic and vintage motorcycles has led to the new New Zealand Classic Motorcycles, owned by Nelson-based businessman and philanthropist, Tom Sturgess. The collection showcases Tom’s more than 280 diverse classic and vintage motorcycle and sidecar combinations. There also is a smattering of micro and three-wheeled cars. Soon information will be available on the bikes and vehicles via QR codes, accessible via electronic devices such as smart phones. “I have always been fascinated with motorcycles and one thing just led to another,” Tom says. The collection includes vehicles from Spain, Italy, Denmark, Germany, England, France, Netherlands, USA, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belgium and New Zealand. The oldest classic motorcycles on display are a 1902 Peugeot Perfecta and 1902 rideable Motosacoche. The display holds one of the

largest collections of Brough Superior motorcycles, as well as a wide selection of Indians and vintage four-cylinder American motorcycles. One of Tom’s personal favourites is a very special 1914 Clyno, worked on by world class restorer, Richard Conlon from Tasman. Tom is thrilled that there is a distinct New Zealand content to the bikes. “Some of these bikes have been in New Zealand for over 100 years and many of these bikes have racing cachet as well as much of the restoration work having been done by generations of talented New Zealanders.” In addition to the motorcycles,

there are also vintage motorcycle posters from the early 1900s, primarily European, on display and a viewable workshop with three active stations. “These bikes are not static; we have some quite talented people who work on them; it is every bit as interesting to watch them working on the bikes as the bikes themselves. Many of these wouldn’t be in the condition or display state they are in without the work of project manager Wayne Daniel, specialised mechanic Steve Scullion, machinist Alan Malaquin and volunteer, Alistair Ford,” Tom says. The New Zealand Classic Motorcycle building will target the high-end tourism market but will also be open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. Entry is $20 per adult and $15 per child under 15 years, with on-going donations being made to local Nelson charities and organisations. The latest dog-poisoning tragedy in the Wai-iti River has prompted scientists to consider a review of the safety standards for the toxic bluegreen algae that is infesting rivers throughout Nelson and Tasman. Dylan Hedges and Maria Whitley’s five-year-old dog Rosie died within 30 minutes of swimming in the Wai-iti River near Spring Grove, last Thursday. Although the cause of Rosie’s tragic death has not been confirmed, Dylan suspects she was poisoned by the toxic blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria. “She is only five and super-fit and healthy, but then she looked a bit unwell when we came back from the river,” Dylan says. “I put her in her kennel and went back out to check half an hour later and she was dead. She loved to fetch sticks and I guess that’s how she may have ingested the algae. She was a lovely dog.” Although council environmental scientist Trevor James says they have been monitoring levels of the

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz toxic algae in the Spring Grove swimming hole and other sites on the Wai-iti and Waimea rivers, it had not reached levels that are considered to be dangerous. National guidelines state that the algae only represents a public health risk when it covers 20 per cent or more of the riverbed but Trevor says that may need to be reviewed. Trevor says there had also been an incident where a dog died after swimming at a site where the coverage of the toxic algae was only three per cent. It was also the second dog death in the Wai-iti River at Spring Grove. In Nelson, the council are monitoring the algae-prone Maitai River weekly and say it is not currently safe for dogs to swim in the lower Maitai River, but it is ok for dogs swim in the river above the Maitai Valley Motor Camp.

Garin dux off for a new adventure Simon Bloomberg
Garin College Dux, Kirsten McCashin, is looking forward to her next big adventure when she heads to Otago University to study health sciences next year. Kirsten, 17, was named dux at the college’s senior prizegiving last Thursday, ending a successful academic and sporting year for her. She excelled in calculus, statistics, biology, chemistry and physics and has been a member of a number of the college’s champion adventure racing teams. “It’s going to be a very exciting year,”
Kirsten says. “I’m off south to Dunedin to study health sciences and hopefully I’ll get into medical school. “I’ll also continue with adventure racing, but probably on a smaller scale. My friend Annelise van Zoelen, who was in the teams with me, is going to Dunedin too, so we’ll do a few races together.” Kirsten says there have been a number of highlights during her five years at Garin, including winning the national Go412 adventure racing championships in 2013. She also enjoyed the academic and sporting challenges during her final year at

It was well attended with around 60 people, and included the local reverend Natasha Glenderran presenting Tadmor Church Society chairman, Bruce Moffitt, with the keys to the church and the communion set that had been looked after by the local parish. Free brass band concert, Tuesday, December 2: The newly-formed Tasman Music Trust Band played its free concert at the Waimea College Hall last Friday and Waimea College music teacher Nick Sharpe said it was a successful night. Around 50 people turned up to hear the talented musicians, although the night was also a chance to farewell members heading off to university and present some awards. The top award for Youth Bands Person of the Year went to Nelson College’s Hugo Coleman, while the second major award, voted on by the band themselves, went to Waimea College’s Jess Rogers. Hugh’s final fling, Tuesday, November 25: Hugh Neil’s final performance at the Mudcastle on the last weekend of November was described as a sad, but great, night. A large number of fans turned out to support Hugh who has been part of Nelson’s theatre scene since mid-1970. There were well over 100 tickets sold to his performance.

Hospital given $50,000 for kids' vein finder Countdown staff have raised and donated $50,000 for Nelson Marlborough children’s hospital equipment. A cheque from the Kids Hospital Appeal was presented last week to Nelson Marlborough District Health Board paediatric staff, to purchase equipment that uses new technology to show where veins are in babies and children. Chief executive Chris Fleming thanked Countdown staff and management for their fundraising efforts. “We will use these funds for equipment that will enhance the care of children and infants in our hospitals.” Paediatrics head of department, Dr Peter McIlroy, says the amount donated was truly overwhelming and more than expected. He said the major purchase would be three handheld Accu Vein lights that digitally display a map of the veins on the surface of the skin, allowing clinicians to identify and gain access for the administration of fluids and medications. “This revolutionary piece of equipment will detect veins up to 10mm deep, which will mean less patient discomfort as there will be fewer attempts needed to access a vein successfully." He said other purchases would include saturation monitors that record the amount of oxygen in an infant’s body. The monitors will allow the hospital to do a sleep study when a baby is at home on oxygen.

There’s nothing like the sound of carols to tell you Christmas is really on its way and Tahunanui is getting into the spirit with its very own Carols by the Beach. The community event was organised on a smaller scale last year by St Stephen’s Church, but this year is expected to be bigger and better thanks to the added help of the Tahunanui Business Association and Tahunanui Community Centre. “We wanted to do a big community event and it’s good to get all the community organisations together, so that was the idea,” says St Stephens’ Nathaniel Petterson. The aim is to develop Carols by the Beach into a popular, annual event on the Tahunanui calendar; to bring the community together and pro-
vide a fun activity for families to enjoy. Carols by the Beach will be held on Saturday, December 20, from 5pm until 7pm, at the Tahunanui Reserve, unless it’s raining, in which case it will be held the next day on December 21. The Salvation Army Brass Band will start things off and give people the chance to sing along to some traditional carols, followed by some classical music from musicians Erica Sim, Allison Cormack and Anne Shearer from the Nelson School of Music and then soft rock band, City of Light. Other events on as part of Christmas in Tahuna include Christmas lunch, Kids and Carols, a Carol Walk, Candlelight Service and a Christmas Day service. Traditional Christmas on display at Broadgreen One of Nelson’s oldest residential buildings, Broadgreen Historic House, has been draped with the festive spirit of a Victorian-style Christmas, just as it was in 1855. The house was originally built on 100 acres of Stoke farm land in 1855, for Edmund and Martha Buxton and their six daughters. Visitors can experience aspects of a Victorian Christmas, such as stirring the Christmas pudding and dressing up in traditional clothing, in the interactive exhibit. The display shows how servants traditionally sat down to a meal of breads, seasonal fruits and baking, while the family of the house sat down to a lavish seven-course meal, including meats, vegetables and a large selection of puddings, jellies and cakes.

It’s the silly season and silly things are happening. Maybe they were at risk of drowning but definitely they were at risk of serious hypothermia. It’s hypothermia that causes many deaths as our frail bodies can only take the cold for so long. I learned recently that a normal person can expect to survive about an hour in our local waters currently (10 to 16 degrees temperature), maybe two hours if the water temperature is over 16 degrees. Recently, we were on the water and received a call about an upturned yacht with children in the water. Seven of them, in fact. When we arrived they had been in the water for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Where was the escort vessel? We then heard over the radio of another child being picked up and delivered to shore. A child will not survive as long as an adult. When I had seen all these guys earlier in the day they were all under close supervision and doing well. Suddenly, particularly as the weather had kicked in, they were on their own. This is not acceptable and organisers were spoken to. This organisation is not the only organisation that has had issues in the last few weeks. So here’s the point: The law is changing as to who is responsible for what. The Harbour Master will still be responsible for the provision of safe navigation within harbour waters, however organisers and clubs will be held accountable for silliness or negligence that occurs on those waters. We wish to encourage and foster safe boating within the Nelson region and will support you – you just need to ask. Club captains, organisers, ensure your supervisors are trained for what they do, ensure there are safe operating procedures to be followed, ensure your members are safe on the water and get home before conditions get hazardous. A Victorian Christmas at Broadgreen Historic House, Nayland Rd, Stoke, will be open to the public from 10.30am to 4.30pm each day, until January 11. Entry fee costs $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $1 per child. Option of a guided tour is available at no extra cost.

Lieutenant Edward George Robinson (b.1892) (serial number 6/339). Robinson, a farmer from Mariri, joined the Canterbury Infantry Battalion during World War One and embarked from Wellington on 16 October, 1914, as a Private. Robinson survived the war and was discharged on 13 August, 1919. His mother, Mrs Edith Bond Robinson, Mariri, Nelson, New Zealand, is listed as his next of kin on his Archives New Zealand Archway record. It is possible that a probate lodged in 1930 in the Nelson High Court may relate to his death near that date.

Test hockey back in Nelson after 62 years It took Nelson 50 years to host its first hockey test match and 62 years for its second. But Nelson Hockey's Craig Brett is confident the wait will be much shorter for the next. The men’s Blacksticks team will host Canada in two test matches at Saxton Field this Tuesday and Wednesday night. It's the first fully-fledged test match in Nelson since the city was awarded a test between New Zealand and Australia in 1952, to help celebrate Nelson Hockey's 50th jubilee. Craig says with the infrastructure now in place, Nelson can look forward to more test hockey in the future. "We had the women's Blacksticks here a few years ago to play an Indian side and, while it wasn't a full international, we had about 3000 people turn up, so we've proven we can get the crowds. "There is talk that we will get some more soon so we’ll see what happens. We’re keen as mustard to have them but we need to do a

good job here first.” Both games start at 6.30pm and Craig is hoping for at least 1000 people for each game. “It’s a big, big buzz to get them here and there have been a lot of people working behind the scenes to get them here. Christmas swim meet at Nayland Pools Swimmers from around the top of the south took part in the annual Christmas Meet at Nayland Pools on Saturday. The long-course meet is hosted by the Tasman Swim Club and saw plenty of personal bests and even a few records broken. Tasman Swim Club coach, Andy Adair, says the competition was a good workout, with the region's top swimmers looking ahead to the Wellington champs in mid-
January. "Its really helpful if our kids have raced long course before Wellington and that meet is an important one this year because it’s the trial meet for the New Zealand team going to Australia." He says 97 swimmers, aged between 7 and 18, took part in the day session and 98 in the evening session. "I thought it went really well, there was some excellent swimming there. It was good racing and good rehearsal."

Judo student gets help from business
Finn Sweetman's goal of competing at the Oceania Judo championships in New Caledonia in April received a timely boost last week when he won the McGlashen Pharmacy Young Achiever Scholarship. The Nayland College student and judo brown belt has already competed at the last two Oceania champs, in Auckland last year and Cairns in 2013. And thanks to Andrew McGlashen of McGlashen Pharmacy, Finn will be able to help his parents fund the cost of travelling to a selection training camp for the 2015 champs in Wanganui in February and, if he gets selected, to New Caledonia in April.

Andrew says Finn was a standout applicant for the $1000 scholarship which is open to students aged 16 and under across Nelson and Tasman who excel in sports, music, outside interests or academically. Finn has been a judoka at the Nelson Judo Club for eight years and has also performed well academically. "It's difficult for young athletes to fundraise, especially in minority sports like judo," Andrew says. "I hope this helps him achieve his goals."
Judging by the amount of trailers parked at the boat ramp every fine morning, it certainly looks like a lot of people making the most of the snapper. However, as the snapper are starting to spawn within the next couple of weeks it will be getting much harder to catch them. This quieter period normally lasts over the summer holidays, and is then followed by increased feeding activity once the snapper have completed their spawning and need a good feed. Now can be a good time of the year to change your fishing tactics and focus on some of the other species that also migrate into Tasman Bay over the summer. Kingfish would have to be one of the best inshore sports fish there is. With the rising water temperature, kingies can be found along our rocky shore and reefs. There are different techniques of targeting them. Live bait is one option that can prove very successful. Tight balls of baitfish on your sounder can be a good indication of larger fish hoarding them into a ball. Small kawai or mackerel make good live bait that can be trawled at low speed
but is best used when anchoring or slow drift over some reefs. Lures come in all shapes and sizes and we all have a favourite one that works best for us. Reality is that different sea, light and weather conditions make different lures work better than others. It’s always good to have a variety to choose from. On a calm day, we sometimes tow as many as eight lures behind the boat to increase our chances. It’s best to stack them at different depth and length behind the boat. Kingfish are a very curious fish that can be attracted to anything shiny, bubbling or rattling. Kingfish are great eating fresh, as sashimi or marinated raw. They are a tough fish that are easy to catch and release, with some care. One kingfish can feed four people for several days and once it’s all gone you got a good reason to go out fishing again. The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club caters for young and old who are interested in fishing. Paul says one of the key elements of the design is the training and recreational area inside the track that will be used for community activities such as cycle safety training. The area will by accessed by a tunnel under the track to avoid conflicts between users. "It's a community facility that will be used by a wider range of groups." Paul says the project has a tight timeframe, with the earthworks that will form the foundation of the banked 330 metre track starting in March. Then there will be a six-month wait
while the earthworks settles and compacts before the surface of the track is sealed with asphalt. However, Paul says the trust will have to get busy fundraising as soon as the design is finalised. It needs to raise about $400,000 as its share of the project, which is also being funded by the two councils. "We haven't really been able to approach any charitable trusts or businesses until now because we haven't had anything to show them. As soon as we finalise the design, we'll start." Paul says the funding is likely to come from a combination of grants from charitable trusts, fundraising activities and naming-rights sponsors.

The final stage of the design process for the Saxton Velodrome is about to be completed, marking the start of the business end of the $1.6 million project that is scheduled for completion in 18 months. Representatives of the Saxton Velodrome Trust, Tasman District Council and Nelson City Council met with the velodrome's designers, engineering consultants Opus, in Nelson last Thursday. Once the design has been fine-tuned, the construction stage of the velodrome can begin, with initial earthworks expected to start in March. Trustee Paul Jennings says Opus has designed velodromes in the North Island and already has a template for the venue at Saxton Field, but the design "just needs fine tuning". He says it is critical that the design stage considers all possible contingencies so that the cost of the construction stage doesn't blow out. Tasman District Council's project manager for the velodrome, Glen Thorn, says they are working hard with Opus and their technical team to finalise
